Unity Eastern Region Ministry Profile

Unity of Roanoke Valley

Minister: Rev. Luz Lecour

About Unity of Roanoke Valley

Unity was founded in the early 1890s by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, not as a separate church or religious denomination, but as a spiritual movement within religions, dedicated to helping people of all faiths apply positive spiritual principles to better their lives. Unity was founded on the notion that God is within you, and therefore your purpose in life is to express your divine potential. It does not separate people into another body, bound by religious laws, doctrines, practices, and rituals. As Unity implies, we celebrate diversity. Everyone is welcome – we believe all religious, chronological, racial, ethnic, sexual, and cultural orientations are expressions of God.

Unity of Roanoke Valley was founded in 1971 by the Revs. Alan and Kathryn Rowbotham. We offer prayer support, spiritual counseling, classes, weddings, celebrations of life (memorials), home and hospital visitation, volunteer opportunities, small groups, the Body Mind Spirit Fest, spiritual education for children and adults, a bookstore, an outdoor labyrinth (open year-round), playgrounds, a picnic area, a rose garden, two water fountains, all on 26 beautiful acres. Our vibrant community is a home for the spiritual but not religious – come join us!

Our Mission | To inspire positive change in our spiritual lives and in the world.

Our Vision for the World | Centered in God, we embrace a world of love, peace and abundance for all.

Our Values | Spirit-Centered, Integrity, Inclusivity, Love, Gratitude, and Transformation

The foundation of our community is prayer. Our Licensed Unity Teachers and Unity Prayer Chaplains are available for prayer support. Spiritual Education for our youth and teens is a high priority. Our dedicated volunteer teachers provide an environment in which children of all ages may understand and express their highest spiritual potential.

We host a 3-day Body Mind Spirit Fest each year in June, where the community gathers to experience Inspired Living through healings, intuitive readings, presentations, drum circles, labyrinth walks, yoga, sound immersions, shopping for metaphysical gifts and tools, and more!

About Rev. Luz Lecour

Rev. Luz Lecour was born in Puerto Rico. She and her parents moved to New York City in 1952. She married her soul mate, Jose Lecour, in 1970. They have two wonderful daughters and three grandchildren. They were also blessed with a son. He transitioned at the age of 10. Luz says, “The love we shared with our son during his brief life lives in my heart. His transition sparked a desire to go on a quest for spiritual truth.”

Rev. Luz has a master’s degree in education from the University of Staten Island. She taught at a NYC Math and Science Magnet School for thirteen years. In 2000, Rev. Luz and her husband both retired and moved to Florida. Her husband was a NYC Police Lieutenant. Luz missed teaching, so after settling into their new home and new community, she resumed her teaching career. She taught at a school in the Citrus County School System for nine years as a classroom teacher and two years as a writing coach. In 2011, she retired (again).

Before retiring, Rev. Luz discovered Unity. It did not take long for her to dive into Unity’s teachings. She says, “Unity’s teachings transformed my life.” In 2014, she felt the call to become a Unity Minister. She graduated from the Unity Urban Ministerial School in 2017 and was ordained by Unity Worldwide Ministries in 2018. She has served as the Senior Minister at Unity of Citrus County and is now our Senior Minister at Unity of Roanoke Valley. “I continue to listen to Spirit and allow myself to be where I am called to be. I am honored to serve the community of Unity of Roanoke Valley. It is a loving, accepting, and healing place where all are welcomed and embraced as a child of God.”

Rev. Luz is passionate about sharing the life-changing universal teachings of Unity with anyone who is willing to listen. Her mission is to be a healing presence of Divine Love in the world and to support others on their journey of deep healing. Her love, passion, humor, wisdom, and depth are evident in all she does.

Outside of ministry, Rev. Luz loves to travel, read, write, dance, and spend time with family. She lives with her husband, Jose, and their cat, Mia.
